Daly's Gone Wrong

Two posts in a day! Ska on a ska blog! Return to former glory? Possibly!

Daly's Gone Wrong are an amalgam of some of the trendy things to do in punk and metalcore these days. They do they pop punk/metalcore verse/chorus switch and they have the humorous bursts of other genres except here they're mostly ska. There's even a straight acoustic love song. It's incredibly catchy through its six songs, with shout-along repetitions and and clean singing/screaming juxtaposition. I think they do it better than anyone else. Recommended if you like The Flaming Tsunamis, A Billion Ernies, or Folly.

I found these guys out while looking at QuoteUnquoteRecords.com, the Label that the dude from Bomb the Music Industry! owns. I expected these guys to be little cutesy ska-punk or folk punk, but I was extremely surprised when I downloaded 'Walk is Godlike' off of their website and found a Progressive Hardcore album that blew my mind, with talent and composition all over the map, I'd definitely suggest this to anyone.

These guys are kind of a mystery. No Myspace page, no known pictures, hardly any recognition whatsoever, even in the underground screamo world. But I was able to find this wiki page on them on this underground music wiki page. They used to be a part of the Post-Punk band Sender/Receiver, then released an alright ST and their incredible full length, and 3/4ths of the band went on to Racc-oo-oon. These Chaotic screamo dudes only released one full album in 2004, which is The Tarpit, produced by Waking Records company. But this one album, in my opinion, is better than the big screamo giants like Hot Cross and Saetia combined. This quartet has an amazing dual vocal system, and their instrument technical proficiency is beyond amazing. Definitely one of my top albums ever. It makes me glad that we're now the only blog that I know of to share these fellows, and I hope more follow suit.

A Wilhelm Scream are probably the best remaining SoCal punk band. Technically proficient and frantic as hell, there's no lack of energy in their short bursts of melodious hardcore punk. The self-titled EP they released this year exemplifies these traits to the greatest extent of any of their recordings thus far.

Choking Victim

Choking Victim were one of the more popular bands of the Crack Rock Steady scene. They're obviously pretty rebellious because they sing about smoking crack and Satan and stuff. Their bassist kicks ass, too. Here's what I have by them:

Off Minor

I do believe I have the honor of posting the first screamo band on this blog. This band, Off Minor, was formed by 3/5ths of Saetia after they broke up. It seems like their goal is to make as much controlled, beautiful chaos as they can out of these three instruments. They have progressed the sound of screamo and are one of the biggest in the genre, thankfully.

Bomb the Music Industry!

Bomb the Music Industry! are one of those ridiculously D.I.Y. hardcore bands. Even though they offer all of their music for free, I shelled out $15 to see them (awesome) and $10 for Album Minus Band on vinyl. It made me feel like such a punk. I usually don't feel like that. Since they offer all of their music for free download on their site, I'm not going to post my own links for them.
